Something to Lay a Finger(s) On
From being obscure American novelty toys in the 1970’s used merely as key chains, to becoming well-known items of hobbyists and collectors alike, fingerboards are truly growing in exposure and growing worldwide. These, though originated in the 70’s, have only garnered its exposure as a serious item and not just a toy when Tech Deck, a prime fingerboard company, started manufacturing these, which were more “rideable.” With more people getting into the scene, fingerboards flourished. Its scene now grows at a rapid rate.
Fingerboards are basically miniature models of skateboards with real working wheels and parts. One places two of his fingers on it, preferably the index and middle finger, and performs tricks, just like on an actual skateboard; one is able Ollie, kickflip and grind with no injuries, just comfort.
People have clearly been getting into the fingerboarding scene. Firstly, it is evident on the Internet, since fingerboard companies have been sprouting up – Blackriver-ramps, Flatface, Fingerboard Store and No Comply are just some to name a few. These brands create different kinds of fingerboards and fingerboard paraphernalia – high-end and professional and in turn, costly. Secondly, on the Internet again, it is seen that a growing number of fingerboarding videos have been made – videos of an exhibition of tricks, an advertisement or just a person fingerboarding. All these prove that the scene does grow.
To add to what has been stated above, the fingerboard scene has also gone worldwide – from its humble beginnings in the United States, which then spread like wildfire to Europe and now to almost every country in the world. Fingerboarding has even gotten television exposure in these countries, specifically Germany, Portugal and the Philippines. In these television exposures, chosen fingerboarders from the respective countries spoke about fingerboarding and showcased their skills by means of demos and exhibitions. Most surprisingly, that yes, even the Philippines have embraced this. A Filipino fingerboarding forum has been created, named “Confisk8s,” where Filipinos nationwide gather to express their thoughts, post fingerboard-related photographs and videos, buy and sell items and also schedule meet-ups, all for the passion, promotion and support of the scene.
For some, this newfound activity may appear unappealing and even ridiculous, but for others, this has become a lifestyle, more than just a leisurely activity. Any way you look at it, it is for a fact that the fingerboarding scene is growing and is nowhere near ceasing. Through true fingerboarders, the scene will continue to rise and bring forth new possibilities in fingerboarding. All that is left to do is watch it grow, and better yet, join in the unending fun and joy!
